Polyphone

If you are a Chinese learner,you must meet polyphones,which is called is called “duō yīn zì”(多音字) in Chinese, and make you confusing. Feature of polyphones  have multiple pronunciations. In order to learn Mandarin Chinese, we must master the usage of Chinese characters with more than one pronunciation. Here are 10 characters I listed we often used in spoken Chinese.

还:1) huán 还钱 2) hái 还那样
Meaning: when it is pronounced as” huán” which means give back money as a verb, when it pronounced” hái” which means still.

乐:1) lè 欢乐 2) yuè 音乐
Meaning: when it is pronounced as” lè” which means joy,when it pronounced” yuè” which means music.

佛: 1)fó 佛教 2)fú 仿佛
Meaning: when it is pronounced as” fó” which means Buddhism ,when it pronounced” fú ” which means as if.

都:1)dōu 都是 2)dū 首都
Meaning: when it is pronounced as”dōu” which means all both or entirely, when it pronounced” dū” which means Capital.

吓:1)xià 吓唬 2)hè 恐吓
Meaning: when it is pronounced as”xià” or “hè” which both means threaten as verbs.

会:1)huì 开会 2)kuài 会计
Meaning: when it is pronounced as”huì” which means having a meeting, when it pronounced” kuài ” which means an accoutant.

长:1)cháng 长久 2)zhǎng 组长
Meaning: when it is pronounced as”cháng” which means long-term, when it pronounced” zhǎng ” which means group leader.

没:1)méi 没有 2)mò淹没
Meaning: when it is pronounced as”méi” which means no, when it pronounced” mò ” which means flood as a verb.

校:1)jiào 校对 2) xiào 学校
Meaning: when it is pronounced as”jiào” which means proofread as a verb, when it pronounced” xiào ” which means school.

系:1)xì 关系 2)jì 把鞋带系上
Meaning: when it is pronounced as”xì” which means relationship, when it pronounced” jì ” which means tie as a verb.
